Life rarely follows a linear path. We draft meticulous five-year plans, map out safe career trajectories, and convince ourselves that predictability equals progress. Then life hands you an unexpected turn: a detour you NEVER saw coming. I recently had the honor of attending ALPFA’s 2nd Annual "Plot Twist" Event, an evening designed to bring multifaceted Latino voices to the forefront and provide an intentional platform for leaders to share their authentic journeys. The premise of the night centered on a powerful truth: what initially appears to be a setback often redirects us toward opportunities far greater than we could have ever planned.

This was my very first ALPFA event, and it definitely will NOT be my last! From the curated flow of the evening to the genuine connections made with people across diverse industries, the room buzzed with inspiration, vulnerability, and resilience.

Courage on Stage: Christine's Story

A personal highlight was being in the room to support my dear friend, Christine Rice, founder of Brandfluencia!

Christine took the stage and shared a transparent, courageous story about navigating an unexpected corporate layoff. Hearing her articulate the shock of that moment and detailing how that disruption opened the floodgates to building her own thriving branding agency, was a masterclass in founder resilience.

Her testimony was a vivid reminder that a closed door is often life’s way of forcing you to build your own room.

Listening to speaker after speaker step into their vulnerability created an overwhelming sense of hope and motivation. It was a space where setbacks were reframed as essential stepping stones.

Uncovering My Own Plot Twist

Sitting in that audience, I found myself reflecting on my own life: What was the defining plot twist in my story?

Without hesitation, it was the moment I chose to walk away from corporate security and build Ervàn.

Since childhood, I possessed an innate knowing that I was meant to build something of my own. I just never knew what form that would take. Over the course of 20+ years navigating the luxury retail sector, I honed every dimension of operational leadership. I managed multi-million-dollar environments, directed cross-functional initiatives, and engineered elevated client experiences. Most importantly, I learned how to mentor, train, and develop people.

Even with two decades of executive proof behind me, taking that leap was terrifying! I was comfortable with the predictability of a steady corporate paycheck, comprehensive benefits, and working alongside established teams where responsibilities were distributed. Stepping out as a solo founder meant trading that safety net for complete autonomy. Suddenly, I had to wear every operational hat: business development, marketing, administration, and execution, while generating revenue entirely on my own.

I honestly questioned whether I would find true fulfillment or if the pressure would overshadow the passion.

Here is my plot twist: I am genuinely happier than I have ever been.

Waking up every day to directly effect change, collaborate one-on-one with passionate business owners, and represent Ervàn with intention is the realization of a lifelong dream. The autonomy to build something rooted in integrity, human connection, and genuine care has made every uncertainty along the journey worthwhile.
